Actress, Singer, Dancer, ENTERTAINER
1932-2016
Two great Hollywood stars passed away recently, in the closing days of 2016. The first of the two- 'Carrie Fisher', who died on December 27th, at the 'Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center', Los Angeles, California, she was 60 years of age. She died as the result of a massive heart attack four days earlier, on a return flight from the U.K., back to the U.S.. The following day on December 28th, her mother- 'Debbie Reynolds', at 84 years of age, passed away at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, California, after being rushed there as a result of a blood vessel that ruptured and caused bleeding in her brain. Her official cause of death was an intracerebral hemorrhagea, which happened while planning her daughter's funeral at home with her son Todd.
Debbie Reynolds defined the word 'Entertainer' & her daughter 'Carrie', will be long remembered for her role as 'Princess Leia', in the blockbuster 'Star Wars'. Both stars leaving behind a huge fan base (includng me), to mourn their loss.
Being of Scottish/Irish/English ancestry, Debbie Reynolds was born- Mary Frances Reynolds, on April 1st 1932, in El Paso,Texas, U.S.A., to parents- Maxene (née Harman) & Raymond Francis Reynolds, a carpenter, who worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad, her mother taking in laundry for income. She had one brother, William, who was two years her senior, both children being raised in a strict Nazarene Baptist environment. The family lived in El Paso for the first 8 years of little Mary Frances’ life during the depression era, until the Southern Pacific Railroad transferred her father to Southern California, so the family packed up & moved to Burbank in 1939, not far from the Warner Brothers’ movie studio.
As a young girl, Mary Frances (Debbie) was a Girl Scout, earning 47 merit badges herself & later becoming leader of her daughter Carrie's Troop, that her step daughter was also a part of. Once known to say that she wanted to die as the world's oldest living Girl Scout, she would go on to continue her interest and support in the Girl Scouts, throughout her life.
She was always full of fun and life as a teenager and was president of the Baton Twirlers, enjoyed dancing the 'Jitterbug', playing the Accordion & was a member of 'The Burbank Youth Symphony' playing the French Horn, as well as having a lovely singing voice. Also during her teenage years in Burbank, she held the title of 'Miss Burbank' at 16, entering the contest because wanted a blouse & scarf, that was offered as one of the prizes. She mimed a Betty Hutton song 'I'm just a Square in a social circle', walking on stage with her friend's high heeled shoes which were too tight. After only a short time into the performance, she stopped the record, took her shoes off & then finished the song. Talent scouts from both MGM and Warner Bros, were so impressed with her, that they both wanted her to sign up with their studio and had to flip a coin to see which one got her. Warner won the coin toss, and she was with the studio for two years, until Warner Brothers stopped producing musicals. They changed her first name to 'Debbie', as 'Mary' was too plain & 'Frances' was the name of a mule (Francis the Talking Mule) but only giving her two small roles in two years, an uncredited appearance as a wedding guest in 'June Bride' (1948) & a small part in 'The Daughter of Rosie O’Grady' (1950), then all went quiet.
Warner Bros. talent scout 'Solly Baiano', had heard of a part in a new MGM movie, called 'Three little Words', which he thought would suit Debbie. Still believing in her talent, he took her to MGM & they signed her up. She played the cameo role in 'Three Little Words' (1950), playing 'Helen Kane', the 'boop-boop-a-doop' girl, then 'Two Weeks with love' (1950) where she sang 'Abba Dabba Honeymoon', along side Carlton Carpenter, which was a hit on the pop charts, then a whole host of movies followed. She also would later have a hit record in 1957 with 'Tammy', the Oscar-nominated song from her film 'Tammy and the Bachelor'.
Her most memorable movie 'Singing in the Rain' (1952), is what she has been long remembered for. Starring alongside Gene Kelly & Donald O'Connor, saw her undergo rigorous training with her dancing. Gene Kelly apparently, did not want Debbie Reynolds to have the part in the movie, as he wanted a professional dancer, so she worked hard to prove him wrong. The 'Good Morning' scene took 15 hours to complete in a satisfactory manner & MGM thought it was worth every minute of it.
In 1955 she married pop singer Eddie Fisher, despite being told not to, by friend Frank Sinatra. "Never marry a singer" he said, "they never stay faithful" & he would prove to be right! The couple made a movie together in 1956, 'Bundle of Joy', which was to take advantage of Debbie's obvious state of pregnancy, prior to the birth of their daughter & first child 'Carrie Frances', born on October 21st 1956. Their two careers made their marriage difficult, but they went on to had a son 'Todd Emmanuel' on February 24th 1958. Todd was named after Eddie's good friend & movie producer 'Mike Todd', who was married to Elizabeth Taylor, Elizabeth being Debbie's good friend also. Mike Todd was killed in a plane crash not long after Todd was born & Eddie went to console Elizabeth after his death. Eddie & Elizabeth became romantically involved, so Eddie left Debbie & the two children, ending in divorce in 1959 & went on to then marry Elizabeth, which marriage also quickly ended in divorce in 1962.
Elizabeth Taylor was assailed as a husband stealer, Eddie Fisher as a wife & family deserter, the children not seeing much of their father after that. Reynolds won sympathy as the innocent victim & appeared on a cover of Photoplay magazine in late 1958 captioned- “Smiling through her tears, Debbie says: I’m still very much in love with Eddie. Fisher’s singing career never recovered, but Elizabeth Taylor, who left Eddie for Richard Burton in 1962, remained a successful actress. Debbie Reynolds fans never forgot the betrayal.
In 1960 she tried her luck again & married shoe tycoon Harry Karl, almost 20 years her senior, but seemingly fit to fill the void of 'Daddy' for the children. The marriage ended in disaster when she discovered that Karl was a compulsive gambler, gambling away all of her assets and leaving her deeply in debt. He also had undesirables visiting the house under bogus occupations, fulfilling his fantasies.
Her personal film favourite & role of conviction, was 'The Unsinkable Molly Brown' (1964), which was based on the life of a Colorado woman who rose from poverty to riches, triumphant over tragedy, including the sinking of the Titanic. Debbie Reynolds in the 1964 Meredith Willson musical version, singing 'I Ain’t Down Yet', brought her only Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, but losing to Julie Andrews in 'Mary Poppins'.
She made headlines in 1970 after instigating a fight with the NBC television network over cigarette advertising on her weekly television show. Although she was at the time, television's highest paid female performer, she quit the show for breaking its contract: "I was shocked to discover that the initial commercial aired during the premiere of my new series was devoted to a nationally advertised brand of cigarette". "I fully outlined my personal feelings concerning cigarette advertising ... that I will not be a party to such commercials which I consider directly opposed to health and well-being"
Her daughter Carrie, often sang on stage with her mother, both appearing in the Broadway revival of 'Irene', where Debbie received a Tony nomination in 1973, the same year that she divorced Harry Karl, then touring tirelessly with her song and dance show to pay off creditors. Also that same year, she provided the voice of 'Charlotte' the spider in the 1973 animated film, 'Charlotte’s Web' & would later have other voice over films & T.V. appearances, including 'Lulu Pickles' in 'The Rug Rats in Paris' & more.
Debbie Reynolds’ third marriage, to Virginia businessman & real estate developer, Richard Hamlett in 1984, proved equally disastrous, where he also squandered her hard earned fortune. Their marriage lasted until she divorced him in 1996.
Her daughter Carrie had written a semi-autobiography, 'Postcards From the Edge', which was an over exaggerated & embelished look at her life & relationship with her mother. Ms Reynolds had wanted to play the mother in the film adaptation of her daughter's bittersweet novel in 1990, but Director Mike Nichols decided to cast Shirley MacLaine instead, with Meryl Streep as the daughter.
In 1992, against friends’ advice, she paid $10 million to buy and convert the faded Paddlewheel Hotel in Las Vegas into the Debbie Reynolds Hotel and Casino. She performed nightly and conducted tours of her movie memorabilia, which she had collected since MGM auctioned its artifacts in 1970, unfortunately, the venture ended in a bankruptcy sale in 1998. Returning to feature films in 1992, with a cameo appearance in 'The Bodyguard' followed by a supporting role in Oliver Stone's 'Heaven and Earth' (1993). She continue to work hard & won critical acclaim in the title role of Albert Brooks’ movie 'Mother', in 1996 where Brooks played a struggling writer who moves back home and works on his strained relationship with Reynolds’ character.
In her later years, Debbie Reynolds continued her show performances, traveling 40 weeks a year. She also appeared regularly on television, appearing as John Goodman’s mother on 'Roseanne' and a mum on 'Will & Grace', for which she earned a guest actress Emmy nomination. Her books included the memoirs 'My Life', 'Unsinkable' and 'Make ‘Em Laugh.'
Debbie & Elizabeth Taylor, the former romantic rivals, had reconciled years before Elizabeth died in 2011; Reynolds recalled they had both been passengers on the Queen Elizabeth. “I sent a note to her and she sent a note to me in passing, and then we had dinner together,” she told The 'Huffington Post' a few months after Taylor’s death. “She was married to Richard Burton by then, I had been remarried at that point, and we just said, "Let’s call it a day".....and stayed friends since then". She also said that Elizabeth was as dumb as she was, to fall for Eddie.
Debbie Reynolds was a great humanitarian and In 2011 she stepped down after 56 years of involvement in
The Thalians a charitable organization devoted to children and adults with mental health issues, which seemed ironic, as her own daughter 'Carrie', also suffered from mental health issues, battling Bi-polar disorder.
Still continuing to work, she portrayed Liberace's mother in 'Behind the Candelabra' (2013), opposite Michael Douglas and Matt Damon & in November 2015, she received the 'Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award' from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Poor health had caught up with Debbie in the last year of her life and the stress of dealing with her daughter's death, would have been too much for her, as even though the two were estranged in the early days of Carrie's film career, before they both died, they had an inseperatable bond, even living next door to each other. On Christmas day, she wote on her 'Twitter' account- Debbie ReynoldsVerified account@DebbieReynolds1 "Carrie is in a stable condition. If there is a change, we will share it. For all her fans & friends. I thank you for your prayers & good wishes".
While she & her son were making Carrie's funeral arrangements, she said to Todd that she wanted to be with Carrie, then within 30 minutes, she was gone. Her son Todd said- "I'm almost thinkin', maybe God had a little chat with Mum & said"- "Get up here & give us a hand!", as he went on to say that Carrie was difficult to handle sometimes. He then remarked- "It's Horrible, it's beautiful, it's magical, they're together, it's what she wanted"

Carrie & Todd Fisher
"My two children are the lights of my life"
Carrie dated musician Paul Simon (of Simon & Garfunkel) from 1977. In 1980, she was briefly engaged to Canadian actor and comedian Dan Aykroyd, who proposed on the set of their film 'The Blues Brothers'. She said: "We had rings, we got blood tests, the whole shot. But then I got back together with Paul Simon." She was married to Simon from August 1983 to July 1984, and they dated again for a time after their divorce. She later had a daughter 'Billie', born 1992, to 'Bryan Lourd', who left her shortly after the birth of their child, not for another woman, but for another man.
Her father's third marriage, to actress Connie Stevens, resulted in the births of her two half-sisters, Joely Fisher and Tricia Leigh Fisher.

Her Children
Carrie pursued an acting career, attending London's Central School of Speech and Drama, for 18 months, which her mother said would bring respectability to the family. Following Carrie's time there, she was accepted into Sarah Lawrence College, where she planned to study the arts, but later left without graduating. Carrie's first film role was in the Warren Beatty movie 'Shampoo' (1975), then at the age of 19 years, she landed the part of 'Princess Leia', in the then thought to be 'B Movie', called 'Star Wars' (1977). No one anticipated the success of this movie, of which Carrie would be remembered for & associated with, for the rest of her life. Carrie later starred in 'The Blues Brothers' (1980), 'The Empire Strikes Back' (1980), 'Return of the Jedi' (1983), 'Hannah and Her Sisters' (1986), 'The Burbs' (1989), and 'When Harry Met Sally' (1989) & some other not so successful films, so she turned her hand to writing and also worked as a script doctor, improving the lines in such movies as 'Sister Act' & 'The Wedding Singer'. Her 1987 semi-autobiographical novel, in the sense that she fictionalized and satirized real-life events such as her drug addiction of the late 1970s and her relationship with her mother. It became a bestseller, and she received the Los Angeles Pen Award for Best First Novel. 'Postcards From the Edge', which was made into a movie, featuring Shirley MacLaine as the mother & Meryl Streep as the daughter. During the final chapters of her life, Carrie became a very successful & hilarious comedienne, with her one woman show, 'Wishful Drinking', where she took a humourous look at her life with bi-polar disorder & challenges with drug addiction. Although, Carrie was estranged from her mother for 10 years during her early acting career, the two grew very close over the years, even living next door to each other, with Todd living in a house on an adjoining property as well. Carrie Fisher and her mother Debbie Reynolds, appeared in 'Bright Lights', a 2016 documentary about their relationship. Carrie will also appear as an older Princess Leia, in 'Star Wars: Episode VIII', due to be released in the latter part of 2017. El Paso, Texas
The earliest known cultures in the region were maize farmers. When the Spanish arrived, the Manso, Suma, and Jumano tribes populated the area. Spanish explorer Don Juan de Oñate was born in 1550 in Zacatecas, Mexico and was the first New Spain (Mexico) explorer known to have observed the Rio Grandenear El Paso, in 1598, celebrating a Thanksgiving Mass there on April 30, 1598 (decades before the Pilgrims'Thanksgiving) El Paso del Norte (the present day Juárez), was founded on the south bank of the Río Bravo del Norte (Rio Grande), in 1659 by Fray Garcia de San Francisco. In 1680, the small village of El Paso became the temporary base for Spanish governance of the territory of New Mexico because of the Pueblo Revolt, until 1692 when Santa Fe was reconquered & once again became the capital. El Paso remained the largest settlement in New Mexico until its cession to US in 1848, when Texas took possession of it with the Compromise of 1850. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Paso,_Texas |
The Texas Revolution in 1836, was generally not felt in the region, as the population was about 10%
American. The region claimed by Texas as part of the treaty signed with Mexico, but the village of El Paso & surrounding areas remained essentially self-governed, with representatives from Mexican and Texan government. Texas took control in 1846. 1836–1848, Americans continued to settle the region. The mid-1840s, alongside the Hispanic, Anglo settlers established thriving communities. Officially named El Paso in 1855, with Hispanics & Americans holding an equal percentage of the population. After the Civil War's conclusion, the town's population began to grow as Texans continued to move into the villages and soon became the majority. El Paso itself, incorporated in 1873, encompassed the small area of communities that had developed along the river. With the arrival of the Southern Pacific, Texas & Pacific and the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe railroads in 1881, the population boomed to 10,000 by the 1890 census Marty Robbins Sings 'El Paso'

Burbank, California
Dr. David Burbank, a professionally trained dentist, purchased over 4,600 acres of the former Verdugo holding and another 4,600 acres of the Rancho Providencia in 1867 and built a ranch house and began to raise sheep and grow wheat on the ranch. By 1876, the San Fernando Valley became the largest wheat-raising area in L.A. County.

Burbank, California, U.S.A.
Burbank is a city in Los Angeles County in Southern California, U.S.A., 12 miles (19 km) northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Billed as the "Media Capital of the World" and only a few miles northeast of Hollywood, numerous media and entertainment companies are headquartered or have significant production facilities in Burbank, including The Walt Disney Co. & Warner Bros. The city of Burbank occupies land that was originally part of two Spanish & Mexican-era colonial land grants, the 36,400-acre Rancho San Rafael, granted to Jose Maria Verdugo by the Spanish Bourbon govt. in 1784 & the 4,063-acre Rancho Providencia created in 1821. Historically, this area was the scene of a military skirmish which resulted in the unseating of the Spanish Governor of California, and his replacement by the Mexican leader Pio Pico. Remnants of the military battle reportedly were found many years later in the vicinity of Warner Bros. Studio when residents dug up cannonballs.

Burbank is the land which lies behind the Hollywood area.
The sign over-looks Hollywood, L.A. & was erected in 1923. Originally "HOLLYWOODLAND." Its purpose was to advertise the name of a new segregated housing development in the hills above the Hollywood district of L. A.The sign co. owner, Thomas Fisk Goff (1890–1984), designed the sign
|
Each letter 30 feet (9.1 m) wide and 50 feet (15.2 m) high. The whole sign was studded with some 4,000 light bulbs & would flash in segments: "HOLLY," "WOOD", and "LAND" individually, then the whole sign would light up. Below the Hollywoodland sign was a searchlight to attract more attention. The poles that supported the sign were hauled to the site by mules. Cost of the project was $21,000, equivalent to $295,189 in 2016. The sign garnered increasing recognition after it was left up.
In September 1932, 24-year-old actress Peg Entwistle committed suicide by climbing a workman's ladder up to the top of the 'H' and jumping to her death
1978 restoration of the sign
|
The sign, designed to stand for only 18 months, sustained extensive damage & deterioration over the years & during the early 1940s, Albert Kothe (the sign's official caretaker) destroyed the letter 'H', by driving while inebriated, nearing the top of Mount Lee when he lost control of his vehicle & drove off the cliff directly behind the H. He was not injured, but his 1928 Ford Model A was destroyed, as was the 50 foot (15.2 m) tall illuminated letter. In 1949, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce began a contract with the City of Los Angeles Parks Department to repair and rebuild the sign.
|
The contract stipulated that "LAND" be removed to spell "Hollywood" to reflect the district, not the "Hollywoodland" housing development. The Parks Department dictated that all subsequent illumination would be at the Chamber's expense, so the Chamber opted not to replace the lightbulbs. The wood & sheet metal structure continued to deteriorate. By the 1970s, the first 'O' had splintered & broken, resembling a lowercase 'u', the third 'O' had fallen down completely. In 1978, because of a public campaign to restore the landmark by Hugh Hefner, founder of Playboy magazine, the Chamber set out to replace the severely deteriorated sign with a more permanent structure. Nine Donors each gave US$27,777.77(totaling US$249,999.93) to sponsor replacement letters of steel supported by steel columns concrete foundations. The new letters were 45 feet (13.7 m) tall and ranged from 31-39 feet (9.4-11.9 m) wide. The new sign was unveiled on November 11, 1978.

"One of the advantages of having been poor is that you learn to appreciate good fortune and the value of a dollar, and poverty holds no fear for you because you know you've gone through it and you can do it again...But we were always a happy family and a religious one. The Battle of Burbank
It started as a minor labor dispute between a studio union and the producers and ended up as the bloodiest labor strike in Hollywood history, and it changed the face of Hollywood forever. First used on a television show, "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In," which premiered in 1968 on the NBC television network. NBC is also located in Burbank. Gary Owens served as the announcer for it, and coined the phrase so it dates from 1968. It soon caught on and put Burbank on the map with television viewers all across the country. It wasn't long before postcards began to be printed with this phrase. http://wesclark.com/burbank/photos.html |

Debbie Reynolds visits the Girl Scouts Headquarters located at 830 3rd Avenue in New York City
Many Worland and Ten Sleep residents have fond memories or have heard the stories from family members about Hollywood actress Debbie Reynolds' visit to the area in 1968. Reynolds came to Worland to serve as mistress of ceremonies of a banquet, attended by 700 people, honoring National Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. officials, and the unveiling of the purchase and plan to create the Girl Scout National Center West (Girl Scout Camp) east of Ten Sleep in Ten Sleep Canyon, Wyoming, U.S.A.
Northern Wyoming, Daily News http://wyodaily.com/story/2017/01/06/News/Remem Debbie Reynolds was also involved in the Girl Scout Piper Project
The Girl Scout Piper Project was launched with great fanfare on October 25, 1966 at the National Council Meeting (now called National Conventions) in Detroit, Michigan. The 3-year Piper Project was devoted to retaining membership in Girl Scouting & increasing membership among young girls who had never experienced Girl Scouting. It's most notable celebrity troop leader - Mrs. Harry Karl, aka Debbie Reynolds - was introduced as the Honorary National Piper. The Piper Project team consisted of Miss Dephane Tabor (national staff), Mrs.J. Lucian Smith (volunteer) and Ms. Reynolds. All troop leaders were considered part of the Piper Project. The project was heavily promoted in the Leader magazine during the following months. The 7" record and sheet music were sold in the GS catalogs from 1967 to 1972. Real-estate developer Richard Hamlett was sexually intoxicating (unlike her other husbands) and a rare combination of “brave, loyal and loving,” she wrote in her 1988 memoir, “Debbie: My Life.”
Now, in her follow-up memoir “Unsinkable” — which reads more like a true-crime story than a fairytale love affair — she amends her impression with four words: “How wrong I was!” Sure, Eddie Fisher humiliated her, his worst infraction being “ignoring our children.” And millionaire Harry Karl “wiped us out financially” and was an “unfortunate man.” But Hamlett? “I’d married the devil.” |
Richard disappeared for two days with his mistress in June, 1993. When he eventually came back, he looked at her with a look in his eyes that scared the life out of her
"I never loved you" he said, "I'm only in it for the money,
you'll never get rid of me" Shifty deals behind her back, she feared for her life in the end There is more incriminating evidence out there against Hamlett, but because he is still living, I have not included it here.

United States Movie ratings
The US movie rating system was created in 1968, as a replacement to the Hays Production Code (a basic approval or disapproval of a movie, without any gradation to describe the movie's content). The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) joined forces with the National Assoc. of Theater Owners & the International Film Importers & Distributors of America to jointly devise a rating system to ‘help parents protect their children from mature material’. The members of the US board work for the Classification & Rating Admin. (CARA), an independent division of the MPAA, which – in common with the BBFC – is funded by fees charged to producers/distributors for the rating of their films. Legally, the US rating system is entirely voluntary - no film maker is forced to submit a film to the board for rating, but the vast majority of producers & distributors opt to do so. Signatory members of the MPAA, which represent the major studios, have agreed to submit all of their theatrical releases for rating. Unlike the UK system, any American producer or distributor who wishes to bypass the US rating system is free to go to the market without any rating http://www.bbfc.co.uk/education-resources/ed Kids in Mind

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) is an independent, non-governmental body. It was set up in 1912 and has been classifying cinema films since 1913. Originally known as the British Board of Film Censors, it was created by the film industry as an independent body to bring uniformity to the classification of film nationally. BBFC categories are used to provide guidance to the UK’s local authorities, who grant licences to the cinemas in their area. When a cinema applies for a licence, it must include a condition requiring the admission of children to any film to normally be restricted in accordance with BBFC classification categories. However, statutory powers on film remain with the local councils, which have the authority to overrule any of the board's decisions. They can pass rejected films, ban films that have been passed by the BBFC, waive cuts, institute new cuts, or alter categories for films exhibited, using their own licensing jurisdiction – although in practice this power is rarely exercised http://www.bbfc.co.uk/education-resources/ed Australian Movie ratings
A Commonwealth Film Censorship Board was first established under the provisions of the Customs Act in 1917. In 1949 Western Australia, Queensland and Tasmania signed agreements with the Commonwealth to delegate their film censorship powers and functions to the Commonwealth. The other States eventually followed suit.Publications remained the responsibility of the States, which generally operated voluntary classification schemes (ie. there was no requirement to have all printed matter classified before publication). Instead, restrictions were applied to the display or sale of 'adult' publications (whether classified or not) to ensure that children did not have access to them. In July 1983 a meeting of Commonwealth and State Ministers was convened to pursue proposals for a uniform classification scheme for publications and videotapes. The Ministers agreed on a voluntary scheme for the classification of videotapes, with the it being the responsibility of the Film Censorship Board. Each State and territory would introduce legislation based on a model ACT Ordinance. http://www.aph.gov.au/About_Parliament/Parliament Debbie Reynolds "I Wanna Be Loved By You"

*The Clarion Hotel, opened as the Royal Inn in 1970, owned by the Royal Inns resort company.
Michael Gaughan and business partner Frank Toti took ownership in 1972, then sold to fast-food and automat operators Horn & Hardat. *In 1980, the hotel-casino’s name was changed to Royal Americana but was closed by 1982. *Under new ownership, the hotel was reopened as the ill-fated Paddlewheel which catered to families who were looking for an option other than Circus *The Paddlewheel was purchased by Reynolds in 1992. Under her direction, the Debbie Reynolds Hollywood Hotel served as an ode to great films and movie legends featuring much of her extensive memorabilia collection. But Reynolds struggled to fund the project, which led to state gaming regulators to refuse to grant her a gaming license at the hotel. *Reynolds wound up filing for bankruptcy in 1997 and selling the property at auction a year later to the World Wrestling Federation. They held ownership for a year, but plans for a full- scale wrestling venue were scuttled because the building was deemed too small. *The WWF then sold to a group that renamed the hotel yet again, to Greek Isles. The hotel fell into foreclosure in 2009 and then fell into the hands of the resort’s creditors in a partnership with the Clarion hotel chain. This Las Vegas outpost has since been doing business as the only Clarion in the country to offer gaming. http://www.lasvegascasinomuseum.com/ Pics left from top-
Royal Inn The Paddlewheel Hotel The Debbie Reynolds Hollywood Hotel The Greek Isles (below) The Clarion Hotel The 'Paddlewheel' was put up for auction and sold for $2.2 Million & the locals were surprised to discover the new owners were Debbie Reynolds & her husband. After the renovations it reopened in 1993. Neither Debbie nor her husband had any interest in operating the casino side of the venue, so Jackpot Enterprises took over the running of the casino. The casino was unprofitable, so in 1996 it closed with Jackpot Enterprises pulling out. Reynolds was unable to secure a gaming license to operate it herself, as her company had a poor financial standing so it remained closed.

Lorenzo Doumani takes over Clarion Where blowing it up creating something very cool
Doumani bought the property in October 2014 for $22.5 million. The Clarion closed for good on Labor Day, and put most of its inventory up for sale through the month of September. It is hoped that a 60 storey hotel will be built on the now cleared land, and the new owners have chosen to make it a building on which there will be no casino on offer. Whilst many new hotels built in Vegas do boast their own casinos, Lorenzo Doumani is looking not to compete with the huge number of casinos in the local vicinity, but instead offer a luxurious hotel for a much more discerning clientele. |

Thalians
Since she was 17 she has been involved in the Thalians Club, which is made up mainly of film industry people and of which she is president. ‘At the beginning we performers used to charge people to come to our parties and then it grew and grew. We have since raised $90 million, enough to build a clinic for people with mental health problems in the grounds of the Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles.’ http://www.spectator.co.uk/2010/04/alive-and 1957: Debbie Reynolds was elected President and she really thought it was for a short term, but she was there for over 50 years.

Always trying to look on the funny side of life, Carrie Fisher said-
“If my life wasn't funny it would just be true, and that is unacceptable.”

Here's another Hollywood great who has since passed on, with a song that goes hand in hand with Carrie's philosophy- Shirley Temple singing 'Look at the funny side' (Laugh you son of a gun)
